1960’s Blouse

Uncategorized

I bought the pattern for this blouse ages ago and have made several versions of it! I made this one yesterday out of the same fabric I made my bra out of.

I really love this pattern. The front is bias cut and it doesn’t require a zipper. I did a single button closure on the back for a little extra room to slide it over my head!
I have also made the version with the cowl in the back, which I think is so sweet and unexpected. It is such a quick, easy sew, and easy to wear with a pair of jeans and a cardigan. I have a feeling I will get a lot of wear out of this one!

Bras, Bras, Bras…

Uncategorized
Dan and I went to register, unsuccessfully, on Sunday. We have to go back today to finish up. I’ve had a terribly unproductive couple of days of (for Ohhh Lulu), but managed to get some sewing done for myself, as well as a really yummy French Onion Soup and two loaves of bread.
I actually think I am going to use these as samples and list them on Etsy… These samples, however, are for me, me me!

I’m really happy with how they turned out… they are simple under-wired, unpadded bras. I had been making these out of jersey, but I like them even better out of woven cotton, they are more supportive. They make really cute every day lingerie, paired with the lace panties I made last week.

This whole wedding registry has been way less fun than I thought it would be. We went to the Bay, spent two hours there, and registered for maybe 7 items. We couldn’t agree on anything, and the selection just was not so great… So we are going to Home Outfitters today, hopefully with more success! I am not really a big shopper so this part is not so fun. I am also struggling trying to think of things I need. I am a practical girl and am used to putting need before want… the whole registry seems kind of frivolous and consumer-driven…
I think I am thinking too much about this whole thing!

Sunday, my favourite day of the week!

Yesterday I was surprised to find a comment from Cecili (and her wonderful blog Sewing and So On). She was passing on some love with the Stylish Blogger Award! How exciting. I’ve got to say, I love her sewing, and her style, and was so excited.

So, the rule goes that I now have to say 7 things about myself and pass it on to 7 others. Here we go.
1. I am a huge loner by choice. I have a few close friends, but mostly I like it to be just me. I find it is often hard to explain to people that I would rather just hang out by myself then be around a bunch of people. I wonder if many other people are like this?
2. I love music, real music. I play guitar and piano, took clarinet in high school, and studied voice for a year. I have a secret desire to start a folk band.
3. I was a hardcore Goth for years. I’ve learned how hard Black hair dye is to get out of blonde hair. I will always have a place in my heart from Trent Reznor and Robert Smith.
4. I studied Latin in university and I forget most of it now. Veritas.
5. I am a Geek. For years, I was a geek in denial. I tried to hide it, to fit in. Now, I just let it all hang out. I play video games (well, Final Fantasy), I’d rather spend a night playing board games or (don’t laugh) D&D or sitting in front of my sewing machine than out at a club or party…
6. I am outright obsessed with Lush . I could easily spend most of a pay cheque there. Right now my current product obsessions are Godiva shampoo bar, Buffy body butter, and Manage Too Massage Bar (smells like chocolate and honey!). I am contemplating placing another order today… I want, NO, NEED some Marilyn Hair Treatment and more Porridge soap!!!
7. I am currently in the process of watching every “Oscars Best Picture” winner, chronologically, with my fiancé, Dan! We are stuck on The Godfather II. Although I really liked the first one, I’m procrastinating on watching the second one. We choose no to have
I would like to pass this along to some of my favourite blogs!
Well, that was fun!
Today Dan and I are going to go Register for Gifts for our Wedding. I can hardly believe it is only six months away! We are also going to look at some suits while we are “in town”. I can’t wait to see Dan in a suit!

I made this plaid blouse several weeks ago but have just had a chance to take some pictures. I wear this top all of the time, and it is so cozy in the cold weather I’ve even worn it to bed! I made it of super soft, brushed cotton, and trimmed it in eyelet lace.

I was really excited about this project, since it had a lot of “tricky” sewing, including the placket and the most unusual yoke-sleeve contraption I’ve ever seen in my life!

I added a ribbon tie to the waist to make it a little more feminine. I often find sash-style belts kind of uncomfortable, so stretch and zig-zag stitched some wide elastic into the centre of the sash to add a little stretch to it.
My two days off are no coming to a close. I feel extra sad to have my days over today, I’m not sure why. I’m so tired of my day job… I’m finding it harder and harder every day to feel grateful for this job, even though I know I should be. Has anyone else had a job that they really disliked? If I lived in any other city, I’d just look for another job, but after almost a year of looking for work here, I’ve given up on that hope in that regard! So now I’m just trying to find ways to make the job I have (and hate) a little more bearable…

Sick, sick, SICK of winter!

Uncategorized
Today is March 2nd, as I’m sure you all know, and I am SICK of winter! I woke up this morning to snows qualls, it is freezing outside, and there is a 20-some-odd car pile up on the highway south of here. I am really ready to be warm. Right now.
I want to wear pretty skirts and flow-y tops and cute shoes… I am so tired of boots and puffy coats, and woollen hats… This is just getting down right depressing…
So, I made some spring-y panties for my Etsy Shop. They are everyday panties, by which I mean, you can wear them under anything! I made myself a few pairs and they are really comfortable, and unlike a lot of my other styles, which have ruffles, you can wear them under pants.
Speaking of pants, I am in the midst of a pant sewing spree. I can’t find the right pants for me to save my life. I am very petite, but have thick thighs, wide hips and a relatively itty bitty waist. I am constantly busting through the thighs of pants yet having to yank them up all the time because they will be too big for my waist! I am going to post a pattern review shortly… Ta Ta for now!

Rompers, Playsuits, Bodysuits, Teddies..

I never get as much done during the day as I intend to… I thought at first that I must be spending too much time “in between tasks” (in other words, slacking). So, I started writing down everything I do during the day to make sure I am making the most of my time! It turns out I waste a lot less time than I thought!

I sewed this romper this morning, which was a quick, easy sew. It is basically a bodice block and pant block with the darts removed and extra fullness added. I lengthened the bodice block a bit for blousing and did some tapering around the bum. The two pieces are then sewn together with a french seam, then a piece of elastic is inserted into the casing, and voila, a super cute retro-styled romper. I added a contrast panel to the front with a little lace, as well as some vintage 1950’s plastic buttons! I think this one is my favourite style romper.
While I’m hoping to sell these, this is a pretty simple style to Frankenstein out of patterns I’m sure pretty much any sewist has laying around!
A few days ago I placed an order from Lush, and it came in the mail today! I ordered my favourite Porridge soap, Buffy scrub, a chocolate and honey scented massage bar, some shampoo and a few other things. I cannot say enough how much I LOVE everything from lush, especially their solid shampoos and the body butters. All I want to do is shower and wash my hair all day long….

18th Century style corset…

Uncategorized

Yesterday I chipped away at my to-do list and got quite a bit accomplished. I made yummy “from scratch” baked beans with bacon and two loafs of white bread. I “borrowed” a cookbook from my mom that was produced by the Ministry of Agriculture, probably in the mid-1970’s about money-wise foods. It has great recipes – the kind that Dan loves, homey, meaty, and traditional. I’m really enjoying pouring through it!

I made my post office run, gave Dan an early birthday present (’32 Hot Rod scale model), cut out new orders, and started on the stays pictured above.
I used a stiff, natural muslin for the base and lining and did an overlay in a poly cotton blend satin stripe fabric which has a slight “pucker” effect to it, that I think gives it a real antiqued look. For the bone casings, I cut 2″ stripes of floral cotton on the bias and put them in a traditional 18th century layout. I am so in love with this little garment, reminds me of an antique quilt. When it is complete it will lace up the front and back and have straps that tie on. It is very lightly boned (for this style) and will have only a total of 14 plastic bones. I plan on making some panties with ruffles that mimic panniers.

I went for a few weeks without any really good, wonderful, mind altering ideas (besides my accessory panties, I still like those!), and now that it is a day before going back to work my mind is full, full to the brim with frilly ideas!

Another great Blog!

Uncategorized

I’ve been featured on a great Lingerie Blog this morning! They have featured my accessory panties. I’m so happy to be featured there, it totally made up for an incredibly crappy long weekend. I won’t get into why it was crappy, it just was.

On the flip side we got to hang out with two of our best friends this weekend, which was nice, and a new bar/lounge has opened up down town that isn’t a sports bar and actually serves real cappuccino and latte’s! I am super excited about this and I’m sure I will be spending a lot more time there. They also have live music, which is a nice change!
More to come later. This morning I have a splitting headache which has been the trend for February… however, I have a lot of things up my sleeve that I would like to get done today. They are, in no particular order:
  1. Post office. Blonde-y over here mislabeled two packages which arrived safe and sound at her home on Friday, including her Giveaway. Doh! I really do have the best of intentions.
  2. Make home made baked beans, the recipe for which I found in a very old Ministry of Agriculture pamphlet from my parents house. There is also a recipe for Heart Chop Suey. I don’t think I’ll try that one, but I might try some of their jellied fruit salads, just to be kitschy.
  3. Corset. Did you know I used to make corsets? I also received a mark of 115% on my foundation garment in College. How is that possible? I’m not sure, but it’s a true story. The corsets I have in mind are more like bustiers, no steel boning, mostly just for fun!
  4. Romper.
  5. Photos.
  6. Skill up my Fishing in Final Fantasy. I hardly played all weekend!
  7. Birthday present for Dan. This year, as he did last year, he requested a Lamborghini. I’ve got something just as good up my sleeve.
  8. Finish up my latest Etsy order.
So, as you can see, I have a lot to get done over the next day! Hopefully I can get the motivation to get up off the couch and get started….

Fresh Baked Bread…

Uncategorized

I have had this idea in my brain for a while… I love big bows, and ruffles and silk fabric flowers, but you can’t exactly throw something like that on under your jeans. I also love clothing that can be worn in different ways… So in attempt to combine those two ideas, I came up with these.

I made a pair of simple cotton panties with three clear, nylon snaps on the back, then made some “Accessories” to snap on and off; a bustle trimmed in silk, silk rosettes and pearl drops, and a gigantic taffeta bow.

I am totally excited with how these turned out. I love making the “accessories” and it really makes a plain-ish pair of panties extra fun.Yesterday I made white bread for the first time. I made two loafs and am going to try to make our bread from now on. I also made some wool dryer balls to use instead of dryer sheets. Unfortunately I am out of dirty laundry and have not had a chance to use them! I scented my dryer balls by putting a bit of fabric softener on the beginning of the yarn as I was winding it into a ball. I used them once to dry some sheets and they still have a lot of scent in them. I am trying to make as much of my own consumables or at least make re-useables. I made myself a circle skirt out of an old sheet I found at Goodwill yesterday; I am currently wearing it, freezing my butt off, but am stubornly refusing to wear winter clothes any longer! I am done with winter and snow and slush… I am so ready for spring!
