I purchased a huge lot of Vintage patterns off Ebay a few weeks ago, and received it early last week. It has some really special things in it, including a Betsy Johnson pattern from the late 1970’s. I really love the styling of 1970’s clothing – though I often dislike the original choice of fabrics. I am enjoying sewing these up in cottons and other natural fabrics.
Maybe I am feeling extra inspired by the clothing of the ’70’s because we were into the 1970’s in our Oscar Movie Marathon. Last night I slept my way through The Sting but have thoroughly enjoyed The French Connection, The Godfather, and Midnight Cowboy and am really looking forward to watching Annie Hall again! It is one of my all time favourite movies – mostly because I think Annie Hall is a copy of myself.I am super excited about this little jacket – I love the idea of the contrasting lapels and pointy cuffs. It looks very cute with a pair of dark, skinny jeans, but I am excited to make myself a pair of wide-legged pants to go with it. I bound all the seams in the contrast fabric, and added a sewn on facing to the back-neck to hide the collar seam around the neck opening. I really liked the faux-notched collar on this jacket, was really quick and easy to sew!I am also preparing for the give away I mentioned earlier – I should be posting a Great Big Official Give Away Post on Tuesday! Stay tuned!
Oscar’s Best Picture Marathon
During our Oscar’s Best Picture Movie Marathon, we watched some black and white, 1950s era movie that starts out (I think) with a couple getting dressed after a romp in a hotel room. There is a shot of the woman’s back, who has on the most interesting bra (I thought). I wish I could remember which movie it was! I re-created what I could remember here:
I sewed this set, a lace and velvet thong, and have started a romper and dress which will be finished tomorrow and Etsy-ing will commence soon after. I am having serious iron issues which has been slowing down my process; it keeps spitting rusty, gross water on everything! I have wiped the plate down, cleaned it with vinegar and water… I think it may be time for a new iron…
We have made it the the 1960’s in our “Oscar’s Best Picture Movie Marathon”, and are working our way through many, many musicals. Last weekend we watched The Sound of Music, which we were both dreading. However, I was pleasantly surprised and actually really enjoyed it (though I admit I fell asleep just before the end, but this is my normal habit), especially after sitting through My Fair Lady (great costumes though).
I decided I would make it, since it looked pretty simple and I have a ton of silk dupioni waiting to be used. Here are the results:
It is just a basic blouse block with a slightly widened neck line. I took the darts out of the back and added 1″ overlap for buttons up the back. Turned out pretty fun and versatile. I like to wrap the long ribbons around my waist and tie the bow in the back.
Dan took me to Scouts Valley this morning for a walk with Oliver. It was such a beautiful day, flowers were starting to pop out from between the leaves, the birch trees were pale white and silver perfection, it was warm and sunny, and I didn’t want that walk to end.
I felt badly because I had gotten upset with Dan yesterday evening. I’m having a hard time containing my irritability; I see myself being mean, or jumping to conclusions, or being overly sensitive, I see myself do it – It’s the stopping myself that I’m having a hard time with. Instead of appreciating all of the changes he is making for me, and the accommodations he is making, I’m getting snappy… and I feel bad. It’s a stressful time, and I am lucky Dan is as patient and understanding of me as he is.
This weekend we started our “Oscar’s Best Picture Marathon!” We started right at year one: 1927, with Wings with Clara Bow and Gary Cooper. It was hard to get into at first, not being used to silent films, but by the end I barely noticed that no one was talking! I appreciated the simplicity of it, and the story was touching. Dan wasn’t able to find the next year’s film, so we’ll be watching All Quiet On the Western Front next, which I’m pretty excited about.
I was shocked to find myself actually close to tears in a silent film.
